SynthID & Pixel Watermarks vs Metadata Labels: What Each Can and Can’t Do
Two different hiding places
Metadata is a sidecar: separate data sections inside the file describing it. Pixel watermarks like SynthID are woven into the image data itself — subtly shifted values that survive compression, cropping and screenshotting.
Consequences
- Metadata cleaning is lossless and instant — and it defeats metadata-driven labels.
- No metadata utility can remove a pixel watermark; doing so means editing pixels, i.e., destroying and regenerating them.
- Watermark detectors work even on cleaned files. Metadata detectors see nothing after cleaning.
Which one is your problem?
Got labeled after using Photoshop, Lightroom or an AI generator? Almost certainly metadata — check the file, clean it, done. Got flagged on a file the checker calls clean? Then a classifier or watermark is involved, and no sidecar tool will save that upload.
