Image Metadata Explained: EXIF vs XMP vs C2PA for Creators
Four layers, one file
Your finished JPEG is an onion. At the center: entropy-coded pixels. Around them: EXIF (camera truth), XMP (software’s diary), IPTC (publishing attribution) and, newest, C2PA (cryptographic provenance). PNG files add their own text-chunk system where Stable Diffusion UIs happily dump entire parameter sheets.
Who reads what
- Operating systems read EXIF for Photos-app sorting and maps.
- Editors read/write XMP to remember your develop settings.
- Stock agencies read IPTC for rights and credits.
- Social platforms scan C2PA/XMP for AI transparency labels.
- Anyone with the file can read all of it — including your GPS history.
What creators should actually do
- Keep masters with full metadata privately — it’s your receipt trail.
- Publish derivatives: run the cleaner on anything leaving your device.
- Add back only what a contract requires (some licensing needs embedded copyright).
The false-positive trap
Because C2PA records edits, a completely real photo edited with Generative Fill or AI Denoise inherits partial-AI credentials.
